Happy New Year

Hello Swimming Eagles!

I hope you all had a wonderful Christmas!

Just a reminder that we will have a practice on Saturday, January 5th. The first session will start at 3:00 and the 2nd session will start at 4:30. This will be a practice meet as we prepare for our first meet the following day on Sunday January 6 at 1:oopm. Also, I understand many thought practices ended when the meets start. Please note that practices will continue each Monday (except when school is closed) through the end of March.

I have e-mailed the line-up for our practice meet and will try to post it to the website.

If you cannot make the meet on Sunday, please let me know as soon as possible so that I can maximize the events for our swimmers.

As a reminder, swimmers are limited to a maximum of 3 events (either 2 individual and 1 relay or 1 individual and 2 relays). Most age groups I will be able to put swimmers into 2-3 events. However, the 10U Girls and Boys are our largest group, so it will be more difficult to do so. If all swimmers attend the meet, there may be 3-4 swimmers that will only participate in one event. I will do my best to rotate this each meet so that all swimmers get to swim in enough events. If available, I will also move some of the 10Us up an age group or 2 so that they can at least participate in more than one event. It is my hope that we fill all three of our lanes at every meet.

If you have any questions on meet rules and requirements, I'll be happy to answer them after practice on the 5th.

Looking forward to seeing you ll again on the 5th, and again on the 6th.

Wishing you health and happiness in 2008!

Merry Christmas

A few updates:

Team Captains
At the Dec 17th practice,we announced the 6 team captains for the 2007-2008 season. Selections were based on experience, success in prior championship meets and leadership ability with the younger swimmers. It is with great pride that we announce the following team captains:

Boys Team

  • Zachary Hoehing – 18 & Under
  • Brendan McGee – 12 & Under
  • Kyle Carroll – 10 & Under

Girls Team

  • Yasmeen Gharnit – 18 & Under
  • Kelly Carroll – 14 & Under
  • Brianna Donlon – 10 & Under
Congratulations to our 6 captains, and stay tuned for a short, updated bio on each.

Practice
Next practice will be at 3pm on Sat January 5th for the 10 and unders and 4:30 for the swimmers age 11 and older. Practice will be in a meet format, so all swimmers will "compete" in the freestyle, backstroke and breaststroke. This will be our final tune up before the January 6th meet and will give me one final look at how we'll set the line-up.

First Meet
Sunday January 6th at 1pm at the Aquatic Center. All swimmers should be on the pool deck by 12:30 and should check in with one of the coaches. Every effort will be made to maximize the number of events each swimmer participates in, so it is vital that everyone show up on time, or notify me in advance if you cannot make the meet or will be late.

Swim Suits
Swim suits have been ordered and I am hoping they will be in by January 5th. If they are not, swimmers can wear what they have been wearing at practice.

On behalf of Holy Family CYO and the Carroll Family, we wish you all a Merry Christmas with Health and Happiness in the New Year.

Dec 3rd Practice

Success is measured one stroke at a time.

Another good practice for the Swimming Eagles. The team is starting to come together well and the swimmers have improved greatly since we began back in October. My thanks again to the continued support from all the parents.

Those who have swam with the Eagles in prior years may have noticed a familiar face on the pool deck, as we welcome back Coach Joan Schweitzer. Joan has been a Holy Family Swim coach for several years and we are very excited to have her expertise and passion for swimming. She is definitely an asset to our program.

A few updates

T-Shirts: Monday Dec 10th will be the last day to pick up or order a T-Shirt. We have lots of Youth Medium and Youth Large still available. If neither of those sizes work for your swimmer, please let me know by Monday, either at practice or via e-mail, and I will order an appropriate size.

Swim Suits: The sample sizes have arrived at Goldman Bros. Please stop by at your convenience during the next week. You can go downstairs to the uniform department and they will size your swimmer. Please note that payment should be given directly to me along with the order from (checks payable to Holy Family CYO), do not pay Goldman Bros. The deadline for ordering is Monday Dec 10th.

Practice: We will practice Monday Dec 10th and Monday Dec 17th. The pool will then be closed for the Christmas and New Year holidays. We will return to the pool for practice on January 8th. Please stay tuned for the Dual Meet schedule, which I expect to receive on or about Dec 17th.

Stay well. I look forward to seeing you on the pool deck next Monday.

Turkey Challange

Despite a slow start and what must have seemed to be a very confusing end with the relays, overall our first in house meet went very well.

The swimmers did a great job and I was very impressed with many of the times that were turned in. I have seen vast improvement since we began together back on October 15th. I also received a number of suggestions/recommendations to help make the meets run smoother, and I greatly appreciate the feedback.

I expect to have the ribbons ready for Monday's practice. Each swimmer earned a ribbon based on their order of finish in the individual events. Since we had to scramble and rearrange the relays, causing swimmers to compete with and against varying age groups, we will be distributing "participation" ribbons to all for the relay events.

While I am very proud of all 90 swimmers who participated, I would like to acknowledge the following who took first place in both the freestyle and backstroke events.
  • Maggie Lavelle
  • Doug Chase
  • Eamonn McNicholas
  • Christian Adames
  • Kyle Montera
  • Kyle Carroll (Kyle is a returning undefeated champion in the backstroke)
  • Kelly Meenan
  • David Vidad
  • Bianca Lopez
  • Brendan McGee
  • Kiley Ferreri
  • Erik Arians

My thanks to all of the parents who volunteered and helped out on the pool deck - timing the races, recording the order of finish, organizing the swimmers, etc. Your patience and diligence were outstanding.

Thank you to Joanna Vidad, David and Gabriella's mom, for taking pictures. They are now available on the website on the Photo Album page. They look terrific!

Looking forward to seeing you all at practice Monday night. I will have a consolidated list of all results available and will eventually post it on the website.

Nov 19 Practice

Hello Parents and Swimmers

Another good practice for the Swimming Eagles, with 80 swimmers participating throughout the two sessions. We are still looking to add some 15 and older boys and girls to the team, so if you know of any, please invite them down. My thanks again to all the parents who continue to volunteer on the pool deck as well as helping out with the distribution of the t-shirts and collection of the swim suit orders.

A few updates...

Turkey Challenge
Our first in-house meet will be this Monday, Nov 26. This is not an official CYO meet, it is more of an intramural meet, where our swimmers will be competing against their teammates. We will start at 6:45, so please be on the pool deck by 6:30. I'll have the younger swimmers swim first, starting with the U6 swimmers, who will kick board their way across the pool in what should be their first competition. I am very excited for them. The older kids should also arrive by 6:30. Anyone who has to arrive late due to other commitments - no worries. We'll get you into a race, even if against older swimmers. The idea here is for the individual swimmer to get competition experience. I will be asking for 6 volunteers to time the lanes, 2 at the scorers table, 4 (2 for each "team") to get the kids up to the starting blocks and 1 to "judge" the order of finish.

T-Shirts
We distributed our team t-shirts on Monday. If you were not there, you can still pick them up next Monday or the Monday after that. If you did not have a proper size for your swimmer, please e-mail me the size you need and we will order more.

Swim Suits
When sizing your swimmer, the size we need is on the gray bar next to TYR. It is numbered 22-38 or 22-40. I would recommend going to Goldman Bros or a similar store for better sizing, as I do not have samples. Since the suits will be customized with the team name, they are not exchangeable.

Many have asked if the team suits are required. By CYO rule, all suits must be the same type and similar coloring. Personally, I would prefer all swimmers have the same suit. However, if you already have a Holy Family suit from a prior year or have a competition style suit with black and blue coloring, that will be fine. Keep in mind the suits run small but tend to expand when they get wet.

Please note that swim suit orders are due by Monday December 3rd, so that we will have enough time to have them delivered by our first meet (some time in early January).

If you have any questions or concerns regarding the suit, please speak with me. While it is important to show team unity by way of the suits, it is more important the the swimmers are comfortable and enjoying their time in the pool.

Swim Caps
Swim caps are required for girls (unless their hair is very short) and not for boys (unless their hair is very long). The league is more strict with the swim caps. Since they cannot bear the logo of another swim club or the "logo only" of a manufacturing (i.e. TYR or Speedo), I ask that all swimmers who will be using a bathing cap order the team cap, which will be emblazoned with the Holy Family name.

CYO Rules Pertaining to Meets
I will be distributing a short informational package detailing the rules as set forth by CYO of Nassau Suffolk as well as some in-house requirements. I anticipate having these for this coming Monday and will also post them on the website for future reference. Please keep in mind that some of these in-house requirements are guidelines. If you have any concerns, please do not hesitate to bring them to my attention.

On behalf of my family - Ginny, Katelynn, James, Kelly, Kyle and Jillian - we wish you all a warm, healthy and happy Thanksgiving Day! Enjoy the long weekend and we'll see you all on the 26th.

Go Swimming Eagles!!

Swimming Eagles Update

Our 4th practice went very well, as we timed the swimmers in the freestyle, backstroke and breaststroke. My thanks to all of the parents who volunteered and helped out on the pool deck getting the kids ready and timing them.

A few important announcements

Monday November 12:
No practice, as we will all be celebrating Veteran's Day. To all of our family and friends who have served in the armed forces through the years, we extend our heartfelt thanks and gratitude.

Turkey Challenge:
Our first in house meet has been moved to Monday November 26 (we will have a typical practice on Nov 19). This will give us one more practice before the meet. All swimmers should try to be at the pool by 6:30, especially those 10 and under. This meet will give our less experienced swimmers a chance to get used to swim competition as well as an opportunity to win some ribbons.

Swim Suits:
We will be ordering our suits within the next few weeks. A few of the older swimmers have suggested we change from our long time blue and gold colors to something different to coincide with our renewed and re-energized swim program. One suggestion is a black swim suit with orange highlights, which sounded pretty nice. I welcome any suggestions.

Looking forward to a successful and fun filled season.

See you all on the 19th.

If you need to contact me, or have any comments or suggestions, please e-mail me at coachcarroll@verizon.net or call me at 516.433.4650.

Practice #3 Update

Our 3rd practice went very well, and we registered another 9 swimmers. We are still looking to add young men and women over the age of 14, so if you know of any, invite them down to join the team!

My thanks again to all of the parents who helped out on the pool deck this past Monday. We had at least 8 parents helping out on the pool deck or in the water during the 6:30 session when we have all of our younger and less experienced swimmers. Your assistance is greatly appreciated. As we continue to practice we will start to move swimmers into lanes with similar skill level so that they can all learn and improve their techniques.

Next Practice:
During the next practice, we will time all of the swimmers in all strokes, so please try to have them on the pool deck by 6:30 and 7:30. I know we still have some conflicts with other sports as well as religious education, so if you get their late, no worries. For those whose swimmers are less experienced, please assure them that timing them is simply a way for us and them to gauge their improvement throughout the season, and that this Monday is not a competition. They need to simply do their best.

Turkey Challenge:
Remember to come down by 6:30 on November 19th for our first in house meet - The Turkey Challenge. This will give us an idea of how a dual meet is run, how to prepare for the start of the race and what competition - and earning a ribbon - feels like.

All swimmers will compete and every place (1st - 6th) will earn a ribbon. I will also try to get a handout to everyone explaining the rules that CYO of Nassau Suffolk abide by with respect to swimming competition prior to or on the 19th.

Looking forward to seeing you all on Monday night.

Eagles Soar During 2nd Practice

With a combined 80 plus swimmers attending the two sessions this past Monday, the season is off to a great start. We now have over 100 swimmers registered and continue to recruit more, especially those over age 14.

My thanks to Mr. Morrisey, Mr. Hoeing, Mr & Mrs. Franolich and Mrs. Donlon for helping out on the pool deck (if I missed anyone, I do apologize). Also, my thanks to Mrs Wallitsch again for helping with registrations.

I spoke with a few parents after each session and I again welcome any and all volunteers to help with the practices. As we continue to move along and determine the level at which our swimmers are at, practices will become more structured. I have also received interest from some Holy Trinity swimmers who want to come down and volunteer coach. They would be great for our program!

I do have one request - I am looking for a "permanent" volunteer at each session to help with attendance, so I can ensure all registrants have been properly contacted. At this point, I believe about 12-15 registered swimmers have not yet made a practice, mainly due to other obligations. Many I have been in contact with, some I have not, so I want to contact them. So when your swimmers arrive, please have them sign in at the front table. This is also where they will get their lane assignments for the night.

The permit issues have been resolved (we were in the right), so all swimmers who are age 10 and under as of Dec 1, 2007 will swim at 6:30. All others will swim at 7:30 (and we will end closer to 9pm). If anyone prefers to have their younger swimmers swim the later session with a sibling due to scheduling, that is fine. You are also welcome to have them swim both sessions.

Turkey Challenge
On Monday November 19, we will hold our first "in-house" meet. This competition will be between ourselves (I'll divide up two teams and ask for volunteer coaches) and will give our swimmers the opportunity to get used to a dual meet, get used to competition and to earn some ribbons! All swimmers are eligible to swim but not required. This is all for fun and we want them to enjoy themselves. Ribbons will be given out for 1st through 6th place.

Team Swim Suits
In the next week or so, I will be getting together pricing for our team swim suits so that you may order them for the upcoming competitions. I will also get pricing on swim caps and goggles. I am hoping we can customize our suits and caps with the team name, but that will depend on costs.

Team Pictures
It has been a while since we have had a photographer in for team and individual pictures. Please let me know if there would be an interest and I will make arrangements - OR - if anyone is a capable photographer, maybe we can do this in house and keep costs down.

See you all on Monday.

If you ain't makin' waves, you ain't kickin' hard enough!

Eagle Update

Looks like the pool will be available at 6:30 tonight (Monday Oct 22) for the U10s and U8s. I did offer to share the pool with Hicksville HS through the Bethpage Facility coordinator, but they did not have a use permit for tonight, so Bethpage declined the offer.

The U18s, U14s and U12s should still plan on swimming at 7:30.

If any of the U10s and U8s need to swim at 7:30 for scheduling reasons, that is fine.

See you all tonight.

1st Practice - Rough Start; Good Finish

The Eagles held there first practice this past Monday night, only to find the pool occupied by the Hicksville High School Girls' Varsity Swim Team. After some waiting, lots of patience and some "conversation" with the coach (thanks Mrs. Gharnit and Mrs. McGee), we finally got the kids into the water at about 7:15. After a slow start, things began to gel and I do believe the swimmers ended up with a good first practice. My thanks to all who volunteered on the pool deck as well as those who offered again to help in any way possible. Your assistance is appreciated, and needed, and will help make this program a huge success.

I have since spoken with Bethpage facilities (Tuesday morning) and have been assured that the error was not on our part. That being said, I have been trying to contact the Hicksville Coach to offer to share the pool next week as the girls prepare for their final meet and, hopefully, a chance at the District Championships. As a Hicksville Parish, this is our High School and our team, and I feel we owe them every opportunity to succeed. In addition, many of these girls were a part of our team in prior years and I am hoping they will join again and continue throughout High School.

Therefore, let's plan for a joint practice of all ages at 7:30pm. I will be there early (by 6:30) in case the pool is available, so you are free to come as well, or give me a call (516.395.0432) on my cell phone.

Also, please check this website again, as this will be my primary means of posting scheduling changes.

We have over 100 swimmers registered and are hoping for as few more, especially those at the U14 and U18 age groups. While 100 seems like a lot, it is actually a good thing, as it will give us an opportunity to ensure (or at least try) that all spots are filled throughout the meets.

Sometime in November, I will provide a handout of league rules as they relate to the dual meets as well as what to expect from the coaches and what we in turn expect from the swimmers.

I look forward as we continue with the season. Those who have supplied an e-mail address, be on the lookout for some communication from me soon.

Looking forward to seeing you all again on Monday.

2007-2008 Season Set to Start

Hello and welcome to the Holy Family Eagles Swim Club "Coach's Blog".

Our practice season is set to start this Monday, Oct 15th at Bethpage High School. The first session (for all swimmers 10 & under) will start at 6:30pm and end at 7:30pm. Please have your swimmers on the pool deck by 6:30 so we can get started.

The second session will start between 7:30 and 7:45 and will end at about 8:45.

I do apologize for the late notice (an e-mail to all those already registered will follow), but we just received the permit today.

We are very excited about the upcoming season, we have close to 70 swimmers registered and we are expecting 10-15 more to register in the next month. So...if you are still interested in swimming and have not registered, it is not too late.

Practices will continue every Monday (except when the school is closed) through the end of March, with our dual meets starting in January. We will have 4-5 home meets at the Bethpage facility, most likely on Saturdays at 3:00pm and 4-5 "away" meets. The venue for the "away" meets will depend upon the parishes against whom we will swim, but in the past we have competed at Chaminade, Hofstra, SUNY Farmingdale, Farmingdale High School and the Aquatic Center at Eisenhower Park.

In addition to the dual meets, we will also have a few in house meets, so that the less experienced swimmers can get used to the competition and have an opportunity to win some ribbons.

I ask any of you who will be taking pictures to forward them to me via e-mail and I will be happy to post them on this website. I will also post meet results and highlights. If there are any swimmers who would prefer to not have their picture and/or name on the website, please let me know.

Last, I welcome any comments, advice, suggestions and most importantly, parent volunteers during practice and at the meets - on the pool deck, at the scorer's table and in the stands.

Looking forward to seeing you all at practice.
