Practice #3 Update

Our 3rd practice went very well, and we registered another 9 swimmers. We are still looking to add young men and women over the age of 14, so if you know of any, invite them down to join the team!

My thanks again to all of the parents who helped out on the pool deck this past Monday. We had at least 8 parents helping out on the pool deck or in the water during the 6:30 session when we have all of our younger and less experienced swimmers. Your assistance is greatly appreciated. As we continue to practice we will start to move swimmers into lanes with similar skill level so that they can all learn and improve their techniques.

Next Practice:
During the next practice, we will time all of the swimmers in all strokes, so please try to have them on the pool deck by 6:30 and 7:30. I know we still have some conflicts with other sports as well as religious education, so if you get their late, no worries. For those whose swimmers are less experienced, please assure them that timing them is simply a way for us and them to gauge their improvement throughout the season, and that this Monday is not a competition. They need to simply do their best.

Turkey Challenge:
Remember to come down by 6:30 on November 19th for our first in house meet - The Turkey Challenge. This will give us an idea of how a dual meet is run, how to prepare for the start of the race and what competition - and earning a ribbon - feels like.

All swimmers will compete and every place (1st - 6th) will earn a ribbon. I will also try to get a handout to everyone explaining the rules that CYO of Nassau Suffolk abide by with respect to swimming competition prior to or on the 19th.

Looking forward to seeing you all on Monday night.

Eagles Soar During 2nd Practice

With a combined 80 plus swimmers attending the two sessions this past Monday, the season is off to a great start. We now have over 100 swimmers registered and continue to recruit more, especially those over age 14.

My thanks to Mr. Morrisey, Mr. Hoeing, Mr & Mrs. Franolich and Mrs. Donlon for helping out on the pool deck (if I missed anyone, I do apologize). Also, my thanks to Mrs Wallitsch again for helping with registrations.

I spoke with a few parents after each session and I again welcome any and all volunteers to help with the practices. As we continue to move along and determine the level at which our swimmers are at, practices will become more structured. I have also received interest from some Holy Trinity swimmers who want to come down and volunteer coach. They would be great for our program!

I do have one request - I am looking for a "permanent" volunteer at each session to help with attendance, so I can ensure all registrants have been properly contacted. At this point, I believe about 12-15 registered swimmers have not yet made a practice, mainly due to other obligations. Many I have been in contact with, some I have not, so I want to contact them. So when your swimmers arrive, please have them sign in at the front table. This is also where they will get their lane assignments for the night.

The permit issues have been resolved (we were in the right), so all swimmers who are age 10 and under as of Dec 1, 2007 will swim at 6:30. All others will swim at 7:30 (and we will end closer to 9pm). If anyone prefers to have their younger swimmers swim the later session with a sibling due to scheduling, that is fine. You are also welcome to have them swim both sessions.

Turkey Challenge
On Monday November 19, we will hold our first "in-house" meet. This competition will be between ourselves (I'll divide up two teams and ask for volunteer coaches) and will give our swimmers the opportunity to get used to a dual meet, get used to competition and to earn some ribbons! All swimmers are eligible to swim but not required. This is all for fun and we want them to enjoy themselves. Ribbons will be given out for 1st through 6th place.

Team Swim Suits
In the next week or so, I will be getting together pricing for our team swim suits so that you may order them for the upcoming competitions. I will also get pricing on swim caps and goggles. I am hoping we can customize our suits and caps with the team name, but that will depend on costs.

Team Pictures
It has been a while since we have had a photographer in for team and individual pictures. Please let me know if there would be an interest and I will make arrangements - OR - if anyone is a capable photographer, maybe we can do this in house and keep costs down.

See you all on Monday.

If you ain't makin' waves, you ain't kickin' hard enough!

Eagle Update

Looks like the pool will be available at 6:30 tonight (Monday Oct 22) for the U10s and U8s. I did offer to share the pool with Hicksville HS through the Bethpage Facility coordinator, but they did not have a use permit for tonight, so Bethpage declined the offer.

The U18s, U14s and U12s should still plan on swimming at 7:30.

If any of the U10s and U8s need to swim at 7:30 for scheduling reasons, that is fine.

See you all tonight.

1st Practice - Rough Start; Good Finish

The Eagles held there first practice this past Monday night, only to find the pool occupied by the Hicksville High School Girls' Varsity Swim Team. After some waiting, lots of patience and some "conversation" with the coach (thanks Mrs. Gharnit and Mrs. McGee), we finally got the kids into the water at about 7:15. After a slow start, things began to gel and I do believe the swimmers ended up with a good first practice. My thanks to all who volunteered on the pool deck as well as those who offered again to help in any way possible. Your assistance is appreciated, and needed, and will help make this program a huge success.

I have since spoken with Bethpage facilities (Tuesday morning) and have been assured that the error was not on our part. That being said, I have been trying to contact the Hicksville Coach to offer to share the pool next week as the girls prepare for their final meet and, hopefully, a chance at the District Championships. As a Hicksville Parish, this is our High School and our team, and I feel we owe them every opportunity to succeed. In addition, many of these girls were a part of our team in prior years and I am hoping they will join again and continue throughout High School.

Therefore, let's plan for a joint practice of all ages at 7:30pm. I will be there early (by 6:30) in case the pool is available, so you are free to come as well, or give me a call (516.395.0432) on my cell phone.

Also, please check this website again, as this will be my primary means of posting scheduling changes.

We have over 100 swimmers registered and are hoping for as few more, especially those at the U14 and U18 age groups. While 100 seems like a lot, it is actually a good thing, as it will give us an opportunity to ensure (or at least try) that all spots are filled throughout the meets.

Sometime in November, I will provide a handout of league rules as they relate to the dual meets as well as what to expect from the coaches and what we in turn expect from the swimmers.

I look forward as we continue with the season. Those who have supplied an e-mail address, be on the lookout for some communication from me soon.

Looking forward to seeing you all again on Monday.

2007-2008 Season Set to Start

Hello and welcome to the Holy Family Eagles Swim Club "Coach's Blog".

Our practice season is set to start this Monday, Oct 15th at Bethpage High School. The first session (for all swimmers 10 & under) will start at 6:30pm and end at 7:30pm. Please have your swimmers on the pool deck by 6:30 so we can get started.

The second session will start between 7:30 and 7:45 and will end at about 8:45.

I do apologize for the late notice (an e-mail to all those already registered will follow), but we just received the permit today.

We are very excited about the upcoming season, we have close to 70 swimmers registered and we are expecting 10-15 more to register in the next month. So...if you are still interested in swimming and have not registered, it is not too late.

Practices will continue every Monday (except when the school is closed) through the end of March, with our dual meets starting in January. We will have 4-5 home meets at the Bethpage facility, most likely on Saturdays at 3:00pm and 4-5 "away" meets. The venue for the "away" meets will depend upon the parishes against whom we will swim, but in the past we have competed at Chaminade, Hofstra, SUNY Farmingdale, Farmingdale High School and the Aquatic Center at Eisenhower Park.

In addition to the dual meets, we will also have a few in house meets, so that the less experienced swimmers can get used to the competition and have an opportunity to win some ribbons.

I ask any of you who will be taking pictures to forward them to me via e-mail and I will be happy to post them on this website. I will also post meet results and highlights. If there are any swimmers who would prefer to not have their picture and/or name on the website, please let me know.

Last, I welcome any comments, advice, suggestions and most importantly, parent volunteers during practice and at the meets - on the pool deck, at the scorer's table and in the stands.

Looking forward to seeing you all at practice.
